This fighter became the symbol of the British defiance to the German war machine, during the Battle of Britain was the Spitfire. On the other side of the channel was the Luftwaffe. The mainstay through the "Battle of Britain" and through the rest of the war was the ME 109 it served in Africa, Russia, Italy and it was there when the Luftwaffe first went into combat in Spain.
















During that later part of World War two the fight was taken to the Luftwaffe on their home turf. There were many aircraft involved but the two that always stand out for the American effort is the P-51 it was the premier long range fighter of the allies during world war two. It was the first allied fighter to fly escort mission deep into Germany. The bomber that the P-51 was escorting the most was the "Flying Fortress" the B-17. The flight crews of these planes took tremendous lossof life to complete their missions.
